We foster Respect, Responsibility, and Leadership in a safe, inclusive community where youth grow into confident leaders. ## Core Values (The Three Pillars) 1. **Respect**: Establishes the inclusive foundation of our camp. With youth ages 8-18 from diverse backgrounds, mutual respect ensures everyone feels valued and heard. This directly supports our Code of Conduct and fosters a psychologically safe environment for growth. 2. **Responsibility**: Develops practical life skills through meaningful roles, including cabin care, equipment management, and activity leadership. Youth who learn accountability make safer choices and contribute positively to their communities. 3. **Leadership**: Embodies the integration of respect and responsibility. Our developmental pathway—from camper to counselor to coordinator—demonstrates leadership as service, not authority. Many alumni now serve as teachers, first responders, and nonprofit leaders. ## Programs By Age/Grade ### Youth Camp (Grades 3-7, Ages 8-13) Youth camp is designed for campers entering grades 3 through 7. Our goal during these years is to help your child develop a love for the outdoors and camping, strengthen interpersonal relationships, and discover new interests and areas of success. Whether at the waterfront, during lip-sync battles, in crafts, or playing ga-ga ball, your youth camper will find activities they enjoy and look forward to returning to for years. Campers will also participate in leadership programs aimed at helping them set goals and identify areas for personal growth in their daily lives. Overall, youth camp allows campers to embrace the camp culture and fully discover their unique identity. ### Intermediate Camp (Grades 8-9, Ages 13-15) The program aims to develop skills in cooperation, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork. Throughout one week, Intermediate campers will experience a sense of personal achievement through various activities, including high ropes courses, adventure courses, canoeing, archery, and rock climbing. Positive interactions with their peers will enhance participation in camp activities and foster skill-building, independent learning, and creativity. Additionally, fostering relationships among campers is a key factor in the memorable camp experience. ### Leaders in Training / LIT (Grades 10-11, Ages 15-17) Our Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) program is an excellent choice for campers looking to unlock their full potential. Camp Sequoia Lake offers campers the chance to develop their talents in a supportive environment. This program emphasizes interpersonal communication, teamwork, and small group leadership skills. ### Counselors in Training / CIT (Grade 12, Ages 17-18) The Counselors-in-Training (C.I.T.) program offers our oldest campers an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of leadership through an intensive one-week experience. C.I.T.s divide their time between small group learning sessions and hands-on practice by engaging with cabin groups. Each day, C.I.T.s are busy from sunrise to sunset, honing their skills and enjoying fun experiences with new friends. C.I.T.s still participate in fun camp activities and are registered as campers. ## Character Development Programs ### Character Band Program (Ages 8-12) Introduces campers to the Six Pillars of Character: Caring, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, and Citizenship. Campers start with their first band and progress each year, with each level presenting more challenging tasks. Provides clear milestones for growth and builds a lifelong commitment to self-improvement and public service. ### Reminders Program (Ages 12+) Continues the character journey for older campers, counselors-in-training, and staff. Participants work through seven progressive challenges, starting with the Blue Reminder. Only one Reminder can be completed each year, ensuring growth is thoughtful, reflective, and deliberate. Each participant works one-on-one with a mentor who has already completed the challenge. Over 95% of staff participate annually, and leadership team maintains 100% participation rate. ## Staff & Safety - 100% volunteer-staffed organization - Camper to counselor ratio: approximately 3:1 - Two counselors bunk with and supervise each cabin group - All staff complete nearly 40 hours of pre-camp training annually - All staff undergo Department of Justice background check and fingerprinting - Camp Director: 30+ years camp leadership experience, ACA Director certified - Health center staffed by volunteers who hold professional licenses (RN, paramedic) but serve in a personal, non-professional capacity providing basic first aid interventions only—not professional medical care or therapy services - Mental health professionals who volunteer do so in a personal capacity to help train staff on recognizing camper needs; they do not provide therapy or clinical services - All program coordinators are CPR trained - ACA (American Camp Association) accreditation expected 2025 ## Leadership Pipeline Clear developmental pathway: Camper → LIT → CIT → Counselor → Coordinator → Board Member. Many staff began as campers and returned to volunteer because they believe in the mission. ## Leadership Team - Board President: David Edler (30+ years camp experience, Fire Captain/Paramedic) - Camp Director: Jake King - Assistant Camp Director: Katie Wetherwax - Staff Development Coordinator: Agatha Wein (30+ years camp experience) - Medical Coordinator: Molly Ginther - Wellness Coordinator: Sarah Rice ## Inclusivity Statement Conejo Camp Sequoia Lake supports all youth and teens – of every race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic status, and religion – in reaching their full potential.
